Is the HHKB Studio really that much better than a standard mechanical? I tried getting one from the US to China
Why I finally caved and bought the HHKB Studio
I have been a fan of the Topre-switch Happy Hacking Keyboards for years, but the 2026 HHKB Studio model is a different beast. It replaced the traditional capacitive switches with hot-swappable linear mechanical ones and added a pointing stick. I kept seeing developers on Reddit rave about how the gesture pads on the side of the case changed their workflow. Living in China, I found that local stock was either nonexistent or marked up by nearly 40%. I decided the most reliable way to get an authentic unit was to shop us store directly via PFU’s US distribution.
My experience trying to shop US stores from China
I started my journey by looking at the official PFU site and Amazon US. The price was much more reasonable, but I needed a tax-free us address to avoid paying US sales tax on top of the international delivery. This is where I turned to comGateway. By using their Oregon warehouse address, I saved about 9% right off the bat. It is a common trick I use whenever I want to shop us ship international without the extra tax burden.
Why I used a proxy service for my order
I ran into a bit of a snag when PFU’s payment gateway flagged my Chinese credit card. It is a frustrating reality that many US retailers block international billing addresses or refuse to ship to known freight forwarder hubs. To bypass this, I used the BuyForMe service. We basically tell them what we want, and they buy it using a US-based card. I have found this is the safest way to ensure my order doesn't get cancelled at the last minute. It takes the headache out of the process, especially for high-value tech like this.
Shipping estimates and what I paid
Before I committed, I used the shipping calculator to estimate shipping cost. If you are planning to get your own Studio model, here are the numbers I worked with:
- Box Weight: Approx. 3.2 lbs (1.45 kg) including the retail packaging and the outer shipping box.
- Box Dimensions: Small (roughly 14 x 7 x 3 inches).
- Volumetric Warning: This is a compact keyboard. Unlike a large gaming chair or a pillow, you do not need to worry much about volumetric weight. You will likely be charged based on actual weight.
- Battery Check: The HHKB Studio uses 4 AA batteries. Since these are standard alkaline batteries and not lithium-ion packs, the shipping rules are much more relaxed. However, I always double-check the prohibited items list just in case regulations change.
I suggest checking the latest international shipping rates to see current 2026 pricing for China-bound packages.
Dealing with import duties and taxes
Shipping electronics into China always involves a conversation about import duties. Depending on the declared value, you might be hit with customs tax. I always budget for an import tax of around 13% to 20% for computer peripherals. If you are curious about how these are calculated, you might also like to read our guide on import duties and GST/VAT for international orders. Understanding these shipping fees beforehand prevents any surprises when the courier arrives at your door.
Is the typing experience worth the effort?
After using the international shipping service to get it here, I can say the HHKB Studio is a polarizing but incredible tool. The integrated mouse functions mean I never have to take my hands off the home row. While the total cost including international shipping was higher than a standard mechanical keyboard, the build quality is unmatched. If you are a developer looking for the peak of 2026 keyboard tech, using a freight forwarder to source it from the US is definitely the way to go.
